COMMITTEE RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Committee on the Judiciary is responsible for all legislation related to criminal, civil, and administrative law in the District of Columbia. It also oversees all of the District's public safety agencies, conducting hearings to hold agencies and their directors accountable for performance and spending. The Committee also serves as the Council's liaison with federal partners in the justice system, including: the U.S. Attorneys Office, D.C. Courts, Public Defender Service, Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA), Pretrial Services Agency, Federal Bureau of Prisons, and the U.S. Parole Commission.

MENDELSON'S GOALS AS COMMITTEE CHAIR:

Improving Re-Entry:
	Focus efforts on the successful re-entry of criminal offenders; ensure that adequate programs and services exist, and that arbitrary obstacles to re-entry are eliminated; and reduce recidivism rates.
Reducing Gun Violence:
	Reduce the incidence of firearm violence in the District through a collaborative effort of all criminal justice partners--coupled with legislative initiatives--aimed at deterring individuals from committing crimes by using firearms.
Promoting EMS:
	Ensure that Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is recognized as a critical component within the Fire & EMS Department, and that greater effort is made to implement the recommendations to reform and revitalize EMS.
