Recreation Improvements

Shepherd Field
The soccer field and walking track adjacent to Shepherd Elementary School will be modernized and recreation opportunities for our children will be enhanced. The project is currently in the last stage of design.

Upshur Recreation Center Playground
Due to changing needs of the community, new innovative playground equipment will be installed along with advanced rubber safety surfacing. The addition of ornamental fences, bike racks, benches, and picnic tables are part of this project which broke ground in September.

Upshur Dog Park
Ward 4's first dog park, a 10,000 square foot off-leash park, broke ground in August, 2009. The park had it's grand opening -- a leash cutting -- on January 8, 2011. The dog park is a partnership between the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Friends of 16th Street Heights Parks and is located at 4300 Arkansas Avenue NW at Allison Street.

Raymond Recreation Center
A new state of the art recreation center will be co-located with the existing Raymond Elementary School. The new amenities will include an indoor gymnasium, a computer lab, multi-purpose rooms that can be used for programs such as arts and crafts and community meetings, and a dedicated senior room. The project is currently in the design phase with construction scheduled to commence this fall.
