The Petworth Neighborhood Library is currently undergoing a $12 million renovation designed to increase the amount of amenities available at the library, and increase its versatility as an all-purpose venue. The plans for the library call for the windows, doors, and roof to be repaired, for the library
to have better access for disabled neighbors, and for the revamped library to include a 100-person
community room for hosting meetings. Petworth Neighborhood Library is slated to re-open in early
2011. While the renovation is being completed, Petworth Neighborhood Library is operating out of a
smaller, modular building situated in the parking lot of 4200 Kansas Avenue NW. The interim library
provides access to the same resources and services available in the main library, and the business hours
remain unchanged.
The Takoma Library saw major renovations in 2009, with the building’s interior being refinished, the
installation of new furniture and lighting, and other improvements designed to pay homage to the
library, and neighborhood’s, rich history. I am pleased to report that the renovation project, which was
supposed to take 6 months, was finished an entire month ahead of schedule.
